Work to construct a roundabout to replace the existing ‘Hempnall Crossroads’ junction began on 20 May 2019 and is planned to complete early November 2019. The next step will see carriageway surfacing work taking place on the realigned C497 Bungay Road and the new roundabout and A140.
When this initial surfacing work is complete 2 weekend closures of the Hempnall Crossroads junction including the A140 will be necessary in order to complete the tie-ins between the old and new roads. These closures have been planned to avoid a clash with rail engineering works and will be in place during the following times:
Friday 30 August 8pm to Monday 2 September 6am
Friday 6 September 8pm to Monday 9 September 6am
B1527 Hempnall Road will be closed from Friday 30 August until the scheme completes and the current road closure on C497 Bungay Road is planned to be removed on 10 September.
It will also be necessary to close one lane of the A140 on the nights of 9 and 10 September between 8pm and 6am – the road will remain open with temporary traffic lights to allow vehicles to move safely past the work. The temporary 30mph speed restriction on the A140 will remain in place for the duration of the works and signed diversion routes will be place during the road closures (see overleaf for details).

The scheme is expected to cost £4.57m, with £3.05m funding from the Department for Transport, £650,000 from New Anglia Local Enterprise Partnership’s Growth Deal and the remainder from the Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) and Norfolk County Council.
